The NHS is facing one of its greatest challenges: bridging the digital skills gap to enable its staff and those they serve to fully benefit from digital transformation.

About Us

The success of NHS digital transformation relies on the recruitment and retention of a highly skilled and motivated workforce to develop and maintain a robust digital infrastructure that in turn enables communications, diagnostics, informatics, predictive analysis, the security of data, digital innovation and much more.

The NHS Digital Apprenticeship Pilot is a strategic initiative to foster digital skills in the NHS. Commissioned by Health Education England the pilot offers employers a range of entry level, digital apprenticeships to meet the varied needs and demands across health and social care, along with the support they need to implement them.

What the pilot is delivering

The NHS Digital Apprenticeship is supporting employers by improving understanding of digital apprenticeships and offering access to a pipeline of digital talent, through a tailored pre-apprenticeship programme for candidates and a recruitment service.

Employers can gain access to tailored recommendations on which digital apprenticeship standards are right for them and how best to implement them. Digital apprentices can be externally recruited or appointed from within the NHS.

The pilot will boost the update of digital apprenticeships, using Apprenticeship Standards developed by industry experts that ensure knowledge, skills and behaviours are current and fit for purpose. Apprentices learn as they work with time to study for an award up to degree level.

Why the digital apprentice recruitment pilot is needed

The need for digital transformation has been highlighted by the pandemic however, there are already many areas of clinical practice ahead of the digital curve. To continue to enable these, support further innovation and realise the full potential of digital transformation apprentices provide the NHS with entry level talent and the digital expertise to drive innovation, now and into its digital future.
